Abstract

Focusing on the overlap between the vampire and the diva in edits for the AMC adaptation of Interview with the Vampire (2022–), these fan works lend themselves to acts of transformative normalization, a method of containing affective moments of social rupture by directing characterizations toward more tolerable iconography that privileges whiteness. Through visual and discourse analysis of three tropes of the diva—high diva, popular diva, and black diva—these videos highlight how some transformative fan media replicate hegemonic values that manage which intimacies are permissible within a media object and fandom.
