I agree

I agree with the previous commenter. I'm very tired of being asked to answer "a short survey about my fannish participation in X, Y, or Z" to help with someone's paper, thesis, whatever. I'm sorry, but after a while I just roll my eyes and move on.

Here's where I rant: Can the academic trying to study fandom please go to a con and make direct observations instead? You're not going to be able to understand fandom without at least observing it directly, rather than secondhand through a survey.

Also, I feel pretty well used when I get a request for a survey. It's almost always written up as a short survey, but these "short" surveys have, in my experience, ended up being rather long, and take a great deal of time to answer thoroughly.

I hadn't thought of "survey fatigue" as being part of the picture when I see opposition to acafannishness; thanks for that! Good info.
