response to Participatory Democracy

by Robin Anne Reid (2008-09-17)

This essay is a fascinating piece: using the marginalized fandom theory/method to analyze the political conflicts on the Internet is not something I would have thought of doing and yet the argument rings wonderfully right. Not enough fan scholarship has focused on fan conflicts (and I garnered some useful sources to consider in that regard), and the issue of how the political conflicts work out in the U.S., especially in this presidential race, has great implications for the future. I was a Hillary supporter (not a fan, and not a political fan) who was shocked at the dismissal of her in the media and by the party, but looking at the situation through the lens of fandom theory makes a good deal of sense. I plan to send a link to this article to a friend in Political Science!
