Fascinating
"Riverbella" (2008-09-17)
What a fascinating look both at the early history of vidding and a framework for examining both the phenomenon and its products. Although I was an original Trekkie, my active participation in fandom began much later. However, vidding was still of the VCR variety when I first discovered it. I had no idea how very complicated it was, but I certainly have an even greater appreciation for the end product, which I found quite impressive even withouth that knowledge. What vidders can accomplish nowadays--even telling complete stories separate from the canon content used in the telling--constantly amazes me. It actually surprises me a little that anyone ever misinterpreted fan vidding of this variety so completely as to center it on the music. Songs may serve to inspire ideas, but I think it is pretty clear in all the tv and movie fandom vids I've watched that it is the story being told that is central, with the music serving to enhance the narrative and not the other way around. I also very much appreciated the format of the article; the use of clips and stills in the article was very valuable and informative.
